The Verdict so Far

I think it's been about 3 weeks since I've had any diet coke and I have to say, I have formed some opinions on the subject. This is by no means scientific, it's just me, not drinking diet cola or consuming any artificial sweeteners.

I think I'm really glad I stopped.

What prompted me to write this post tonight is that my left knee isn't hurting. That may not seem like a big deal, but I am so used to accommodating a sore knee that I almost don't know what to do without it. It's kind of a shock to sit in my chair and not have to contort my body in a way that doesn't stress my knee. I also tend to have chronic pain in my right shoulder that seems mostly absent these days. I've read that one of the side-effects of drinking carbonated soda is joint aches-- I think I believe it.

Now I'm sure the diet cola addicts are still sucking up their aspartame and shaking their heads at my new-agey silliness. But I think I'm on to something here.

Normally when I try to lose weight I have two problems; appetite and sugar cravings. Since I've ditched the diet cola, those problems have almost disappeared. That isn't to say that I never want any chocolate, but it's a lot easier to eat it in moderation right now. I've also been able to incorporate a lot more veggies into my diet without feeling the need to go back and demolish the leftovers from dinner.

Baby steps.

I don't weigh myself because scales are deadly to me. But I have lost an inch off of my waist, so I'd say that's progress. I'm still lifting weights and doing cardio six days a week too.

I'm not trying to say that I think going off of the diet cola will make your weight melt off. Goodness knows it takes at least twice as long to get off as it came on. (If you haven't ever watched "Supersize Me" by Morgan Spurlock, you should. He gained 25 pounds in one month of eating nothing but McDonalds food. It took him 4 months on a strict vegan diet to lose 20 pounds and another 6 to lose the last five-- so don't expect overnight results) I can't stress this enough to anyone trying to lose weight--with or without the diet coke-- be gentle with yourself. Don't expect overnight results.

I've decided I'm going to give this whole diet-coke-less thing at least a year (though I'll probably never drink it again) just to see what kind of a difference just changing one thing can make.

If you don't mind, I'll post regular updates. This works for me as kind of a journal I can use to keep track of my progress and note the changes I feel in my body. Hopefully I can encourage some other people to try this experiment with me.

If that sounds interesting to you-- One trick to not drinking soda is simply switching to something else. Some people have luck with tea but I wanted something cold. So I drink a tall glass of water and juice; 3/4 water to 1/4 juice. I avoid juices with artificial sweeteners and the high fructose corn syrup. So far the juice/water combo works well for me.

Tell me what you think? Anyone else tempted to leave the diet evil?

I abandoned soda almost two years ago. That's not to say I won't indulge in a rare fountain drink (that syrupy goodness is too delicious to forego altogether), but I avoid it most times, never buy any at the store and have nixed the diet stuff across the board. I just think it's poison. I can't say I've noticed a change in the joint aches or the sugar cravings (I'm a hardcore sugar fiend), but I can say for the first time in my life the weight I've lost over these past two years has actually stayed off. All of it. I drink water or unsweetened herbal tea all day and I'm much happier. More hydrated, too.

Congrats on quitting. I know how hard it is.

Oh I want to try so badly, but I'm just not ready to give up my Diet Coke. *whimper* I could probably give up everything else with high fructose corn syrup though. That stuff is really bad.

I really think diet pop is the devil.
My bil is obese and is addicted to diet pop. So it really helps him. Not. There is something in that stuff.

I just drink regular pop and try to not drink LOTS of it.

Good for you with the baby steps....

I hope you try it. I think you'd be surprised at the results.

I've always been a sugar fiend too, but for some reason I'm switching to salty snacks as I get older. But I definitely noticed a correlation between diet coke consumption and carb cravings. I swear there's a link.

I have tried to encourage friends to get off the diet coke and they fight me harder than someone with an alcohol addiction. I think the stuff is addicting but I also think that we've convinced ourselves that a diet coke can't be that bad, it has no calories after all. But I swear, that stuff is deadly.

I don't know if you read my earlier post on this (I'll have to go back and check the comments) but they're saying that there is a big link between diet coke consumption and obesity. I guess you have a greater chance of being obese if you drink diet cola vs. regular cola -- though they'll both make you fat. I'm determined to ban this stuff from my house forever.

I've never liked fizzy drinks and have always been deeply suspicious of the diet variety and now there is increasing evidence that they are incredibly bad for the body. Well done for ditching it.

I have always hated diet drinks, but oooh, the sweet fizzy goodnes of a fountain soda on a hot day...

I had recently tried switching to coke zero when I reallly really wanted one, but I think now I'll skip those, too!

BioFact about Humans: we evolved to weather famine, not plenty. No wonder we store extra fuel easily and give it up so grudgingly.

OddFact about This Human: My three favorite beverages are tap water, grapefruit juice and bottled beer.

Not all together, though.

CreepyFact about Coke: It's *awesome* for getting the rust off my bike chain. Also removes oil stains from your driveway!

That is some scary, scary liquid right there...

It might not be a bad idea.

Yeah, my husband was telling me the same thing. I hate to think what that does to the stomach.

You are the first and only voice that has got me seriously considering this. In my quest to lose weight, I'm now becoming even more reliant on artificial sweeteners--using Equal in my lattes instead of sugar in the raw. So giving it all up seems daunting.

But the benefits you're seeing are ones I could live with.

I want to keep reading your updates. Wow. I like the tips, too, of what you're drinking in place of what you've given up.

I can't deny that you have very good idea. By the way, from my experience of Bangkok trip. I think that looking for accommodation around Sukhumvit are is the good idea because Sukhunvit is in the heart of the shopping district, both in terms of large department stores and the various stalls lining both sides of the road. The various side-streets provide a proliferation of nightlife venues. For the renowned and well-known spots, you will need to walk onwards past the Asok crossroads to Sukhumvit Soi 21 or Soi Cowboy. This area also offers a wide selection of cuisine to choose from, both in terms of air-conditioned high-end restaurants and open air restaurants offering quite reasonable prices.
